Three questions:

1. Do you carry insurance?
2. What/How Much are you covered for?
3. How long had you been actively twisting for the public before getting insured?

I would think that most people have insurance.  I have $1,000,000 in coverage.  I think you should call the World Clown Association @ 1-800-336-7922.  You will see that it does not cost much.

I just got insurance for the first time this year.  It definitely feels better knowing I have it.
I go through Stephanie Weiss at www.clownsoftheus.com soon to be performers of the west.  She'very helpful and fast. The insurance cost $190 a year and it starts April 25th. She also doesn't charge extra for additionally insured certificates.

I have been doing balloons for 5 1/2 years and have had insurance for the last 6 months. Honestly, I did not get it until recently because I was just too plain old lazy. I am very happy to have it now. I have 3mill coverage.

One of the questions in the initial post is still unanswered and I am interested to know the answer.

Or more acurately, why do we need insurance?
What is it for?

Is it for us? in case we can't work anymore? is it for people that would sue us for some reason due to twisting?

If I am a hobbyist twister, do I need that insurance?
I'd like to hear some more basic answers since I am looking at this topic and seeing only some fog :)

Thanks,
Mishel.

It is a good idea for anyone twisting around others. Even a non-pro can have a balloon burst, hit someone's eye; POP!~instant lawsuit. The insurance most often asked about relates to liability, however, you may find insurance that will cover you when you can't twist. I wish I had that right NOW!

The policies noted above are for liability coverage. They have strengths and weaknesses. I have the WCA insurance, and I've paid almost double the annual fee this year as I have had many requests for Certificates of Insurance this year. Roger, at the WCA, is helpful in this, but it still comes down to, it costs $30 for each one, and I've gone through many more this year than ever before.

Another alternative is to contact Ken Bomba Insurance. He offers more than just a one-size fits all policy, and he is very supportive of our art! Being one of four local producers of the T-Jam on the Road (Maryland) this year, our experience would have been much less pleasant without his support!

Another reason to have it if you are a working artist; some events will require it, or you won't get the gig.

Who needs this kind of insurance? anyone doing twisting?
How about if you are a vendor? or just sell centerpieces? Do decorators need this insurance?

How about if you are a twister that gets a pay check form someone as their worker?

This is the ugly side of twisting, I'm sure, but still I ought to know something about it.

yes and to work among children you need a CRB (criminal records bureau)certificate. I tried to get one but they said my employer had to apply for me. Hmmm im trying to go self employed so how does that work?

I would not be out in public making balloons for anyone without liability insurance. The cost is so minimal that it is just not worth the risk.  The insurance may not prevent someone from suing you, but it is comforting to know that you have it just in case.

I finally got insurance.

I still don't think anything's going to happen, but it's nice to have.

This year's policy is $200 through www.clownsoftheus.com. April 25 - April 25. I like this policy because adding an 'additional insured' is free. This is what I believe I'll be using the policy for most - so that aspect was important to me.

Thanks for everyone's input on this topic.

Hey Sean, for only $200, it is worth it to have your liability insurance.   It may not be a "bulletproof" armour to protect you against every possible lawsuit against you, but it is worth it to have so at least you have one layer of protection for your assets against any potential lawsuit.

I have 2 million, plus theft.  Some companies will not hire you without insurance.
Telling a client that you are fully insured makes you look more like a proffessional.

I have insurance also for 100,000. I got it as soon as I started twisting in public. I've been asked numerous times for proof of insurance before I get hired for events.  It's also piece of mind.  Hopefully I will never need it, but it's nice to know I'm covered if anything happens.
