Going Big at Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras JesterMardi Gras parties are over the top parties and the bigger you make the balloon figure, the happier people are to wear them. Unlike birthday parties or dinner banquets where people like to hide in corners and watch, Mardi Gras is about being the center of the activities.

Oversized hats, characters, and beads, can be made quickly to send a Mardi Gras party over the top. Here are just a couple of over the top ideas to impress the client.  Give the client a reason to hire you back for next year’s Mardi Gras.

  • Hats – make them big, outrageous in design. Think Vegas showgirl headdresses. Long, flowing and colorful will have the young and old lining up to be Queen of the event.
  • Characters – Oversized heads are a great attention getter at Mardi Gras. There are several techniques for making a face, but I suggest using a blush 360 and make the head 3-4 times the normal size of a human head. The heads can be attached to a balloon 360 or 646 pole, worn on a person’s head, or built to be worn as a hat.
  • Beads – Twist bubble after bubble until you have balloon beads. Braid purple, gold, and green 160 balloons to create a necklace, or underinflated six inch Link-O-Loon balloons and tie together. Link-O-Loons make for a very nice large Mardi Gras necklace. In addition, it is easy on the hands, not twisting, just a lot of knot tying.
  • Twist a bead or two – do not limit yourself to balloons, twist works of art out of Mardi Gras beads. Create keepsakes that have people thinking of you weeks and months after Mardi Gras.
