Floppybelly - you have an unusual hobby/art - I can see your skills can lend itself to birthday parties.  People are always looking for crafty ideas, just think of somebody hiring you to come in and make your creations.  No book, no video - just you live - teaching and telling jokes.

Like yours, I had a little trouble with getting it to stand up with straight sides. Animals are more my forte, not police boxes!

Hey guys!

So um... I can't tell if I'm completely out of line in joining this forum or not. Just let me know if I am, and I'll toddle off somewhere else.
I am a fellow crafty sculptor, but instead of balloons I work in a slightly more permanent medium- pipe cleaners! I've been at it for a good five or six years, and have found only the smallest of communities of fellow artists who share in my medium. This balloon community is HUGE! Howdy!
I'm here trying to figure out just how it is you guys do all this; How do you incorporate an art/craft into a performance, and make yourself into a persona? How do you find the right audiences? How do you build it into a business viable enough to make a little money (if not a lot of fun)? How do you develop a report with other businesses to the point where they ask you back?

I sure wish I could, Sheree.  I went to the first one (2010) and it was *such* fun!  However, personal economics prevent my attending this year.    (We moved in November, so I'm re-establishing my balloon business and there's not much income at the moment.)  Maybe in 2013?

To anyone else who's thinking of going...  DO IT!  You'll LOVE the informal atmosphere, camaraderie , and sharing you'll experience.  It will stay with you forever!  If armed robbery weren't illegal, I'd twist a balloon gun, visit a local 7-11 or bank, and be there for sure!

Thanks, Dale.  This was my first "strictly-decor" gig (I've done decor-plus-twisting before), and the client is a possible ongoing corporate client (lots of future potential for gigs), so I was nervous that they would be happy with the results.  Happily, they were *very* impressed with my work.  Hopefully, that will lead to future work for this client and *maybe* even a referral or two.

One lesson learned, though...  in the future I will try to get enough "detail" without adding too much time/work to the project.  Twisting 34 poinsettias (2 per figure) took a lot longer than I thought it would, even though this was a simplified version of other designs I saw on BHQ and elsewhere.  In this case, there wasn't any way around the problem (the customer specified they wanted Christmas poinsettias as a part of the design), but the added time reduced my profit from a per-hour-of-work point of view.  Oh well...  the *important* factor is having a satisfied customer!

I like the style compliments each other.  They're not over detailed and not simple, just right.  Many times you can have one or two that are really great and the other are OK.  But these look good.

Design inspiration for these figures were from Patrick Van De Ven (Santa), Twistina (Angel), Bonnie Davis (Rudolph & Snowman), Beating (Rudolph), and many other balloon artists that have inspired me over the years.  Thanks to everyone!
