How do you keep your cool?

When I twist at festivals, I wear a 5 pocket apron, it's actually four pockets with one big back pocket you can access from either side. I keep a frozen bottle of water in the back pocket it helps keep me and my balloons cool, and I have a cold drink! I keep my balloons sorted by color I wrap them in plastic sheets and rubber band them standing them on end in the pockets, I have plenty of room for scissors, markers, magic tricks and juggling balls. I also like the bandanas filled with??? you soak them in cold water they get big and you tie them around your neck helps keep your cool. Especially when in clown.

Please share your ideas.

 Hello everyone!

Thanks for the tip! I live in Phoenix Arizona and this will be my first summer twisting in very hot weather. Right now it is in the 89-90's, but when summer hits, an average day will reach up to the 110 mark.. boy,. I am dreading that..But one thing that I found really helps me is to just store my balloon's in the freezer, That seems to cut down on the popping.

Take care, and keep on twisting!

Hello all!!

A great way to keep cool is to go to one of those large home hardware garden places and get a really big sprayer for plants...(the cost is about 20 dolars canadian...or fifty cents american) and what you do is fill it with a bag of ice and water......you can mist yourself all day with ice cold water.....and your clients as well (if they want to cool down as well....)

Another thing I do is I will carry a cooler filled with water bottles that I have half filled and thrown in the freezer the night before....this way....you have ice cold water all day long..... hope these tips help!!!

Hi everyone

Chicago in August is HOT!  Therefore, water is required, but your outfit can be shorts - What the person who has a hole forum dedicated to a dress code (http://www.mbd2.com/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID =2&TopicID=20&PagePosition=1/SPAN">http://www.m bd2.com/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=2&TopicI D=20&PagePosition=1/SPAN) is now saying wear shorts?

Yes, if the venue is outside like a carnival, shorts I feel are okay.  If the event is indoors then dress appropriately.  If you wear a nice pair of kaki shorts, clean white sox, and nice white gym shoes, and a colorful shirt it’s more that acceptable.

That’s my opinion

Hello all!!!

I would agree with Dale on this one.......some of us are Festival performers as opposed to Clowns with regard to how we dress ourselves.

Edmonton, Alberta has schizophrenic weather...we can be as cold in the winter as -40c and I have worked a week straight outside in +40c in the summer time........comfort is top on my list as you can hallucinate after blowing up 1000 balloons in a day outside under the relentless sun......shorts works great for me with a colorful t-shirt and one of my many assorted light vests.

I'm fairly new in the game and have limited my work to indoor jobs. I know balloons are hard to tie in the heat. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Twisting in the heat? You want heat? Try where I am (Phoenix) with 110+ heat!

Best advice... AVOID it! Twist indoors if possible!

Next best advice... if you can't get out of twisting in the heat, find shade! Also, avoid humidity if you can; it plays havoc with latex.

I carry blue ice in my apron... keeps the balloons cool, keeps me cool!

As far as technique goes... I use a fingertip technique when doing balloons, so I don't have a problem with tying and popping. By using fingertips, there's less friction on the balloons (e.g., from your palms). Cutting down the friction helps reduce incidences of popping.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Ed Chee

I also use the spray bottle and forgot about adding it really helps... Dan the balloon man as a clown I do many festivals and it's even worse for us!
But I never work in the sun, that is made clear with my contract, they must provide shade or shelter. I also read on a clown list that if you wear a terry wrist band place an ice cube at the pulse point and fold the band to hold it in place that helps as well.
Stay Cool! (LOL right from my year book!)

Hello All!!
One other tip i would give you would be to keep your balloons out of the direct sunlight as much as possible. They tend to "frost" or oxidize. Also...make sure you burp the balloons and make your creations as soft as possible to avoid popping.

Hello All!!
Jewls....the tip about the terry wristband is brilliant!!! I tried it here last weekend in the 100 degree heat and it worked like a charm. Thanks, I owe you a nice frosty beverage!!!

A lot of times I'm guilty of bringing my balloon bag (duffel bag - my portable office!) with me so that I always have whatever I might need where I am actually doing the balloons. This can be a mistake because the balloons will still be affected by the heat/humidity, if you put a cooling device in it like the blue ice, be careful not to make the balloons too cold. It can affect them adversly as well.

Most of the time I try to remember to keep the extra balloons in the office or where ever they will be safe and stay cooler. When  they are there it gives me a chance to take a break when I need it so I can refill my apron and get a break!!!

I will use the neckwraps on the very hottest days of summer. It comes in handy and keeps me cool for most of the time! Like Jewls, I too will make sure that I either claim the shade or require it in my agreement. The medicine I am now taking won't allow me to do prolonged periods under the sun! I also now work out of a director chair because of the leg problem when I have a multi-hour job. A few hours and roaming, I can handle it without needing to have the chair, but if I am just standing in one spot, it becomes difficult.

But the neck wrap does work for me.
